HFD Rules Strip Center Fire in Westchase Area an Accidental Fire

Houston Fire Department HFD responds to a commercial fire June 2019

On June 26 a fire erupted in a shopping center located in the Westchase area of Houston.  Firefighters arrived to find smoke pouring from the middle of the strip center.  The fire department responded to the incident after hours and had to force entry into the commercial retail business. 

The fire was found in the middle of the shopping center at Chuy's Mexican Food restaurant.  Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire which was later found to be caused by fault electrical.

There were 25 people inside the restaurant at the time, all were evacuated safely.  After extinguishing the fire Houston Fire Department members did a sweep of the connecting stores but found no live fire, only smoke and soot damage.  

Crews from Station 2, 68, 78, 10, 69, 83, 75 and 24 all mobilized to the fire scene.

Houston Home Safety: Prevent Home Fires This Winter



Even with our mild climate, home fires increase throughout the Houston metropolitan area each winter. To prevent fire damage to your Houston area home be mindful of potential fire hazards, and be prepared to evacuate yourself, your family, and your pets the moment the smoke detector goes off. Many fires in homes are caused by common, everyday appliances. Here is a snapshot of how to use these items properly to help guard against Houston fire damage to your home.


Space Heaters. During the winter months, it is tempting to take the chill out of the air with a space heater. While safety features have improved over the years, they are still considered a fire hazard, and proper protocols should be followed when in use. First, never leave space heaters plugged in when you are sleeping, or away from home. Second, position space heaters a minimum of 4 feet from flammable items including bedding, curtains, and books. Third, never use an extension cord for space heaters. And finally, always follow manufacturer instructions precisely.

Electric Blankets. Electric blankets provide toasty comfort on cool evenings. However, they too are considered a safety hazard. Never leave an electric blanket plugged in, or on when it is not in use. While in theory they are made to keep you warm all night long, it is not recommended they be used while sleeping. Discard electric blankets immediately if there is any hint of a smoldering odor or if cords are damaged.

Holiday Lights and Decorations. Interior and exterior holiday lights and decorations can start fires in Houston area homes. Never use more lights than recommended by the manufacturer on a single outlet, or extension cord. Christmas trees are a fire hazard in the home; if using a fresh tree, be sure to give it plenty of water, and when needle fall is high, remove it from your home. Never position a Christmas tree or other flammable holiday decorations near space heaters, fireplaces, or other sources of heat or ignition.

Candles.  Dinner by candle light. A relaxing soak in a bathtub surrounded by candles. Adding holiday aromas to spaces with candles. These are all very tempting activities but remember that all candles should be placed away from flammable items including bedding, curtains, and carpets and should never be left unattended while lit.

Smoke Detectors. When was the last time you tested the smoke detectors in your home? When was the last time you changed the batteries? If the answer to either of these questions is “I don’t know” now is the time to keep your family and home safe from fire damage. Whether trick or treating, at costume parties, or in home decorations, it is imperative that you and your family use best fire safety protocols to prevent fire damage to your Houston area home. Here are 6 tips you can easily incorporate into your holiday planning.


Costume Safety. The vast majority of ready-made costumes purchased today are treated with fire retardant or are flame resistant. However, it is still imperative that you remain aware of your surroundings and that you stay away from candles and open flames while dressed up for Halloween trick or treating or parties. Long, flowing princess costumes, ghosts, or other heavily draped costumes are at risk for catching fire due to tipped over Jack O’ Lanterns, space heaters, and fire pits. Also, remember that many wigs and hats are highly flammable, and extreme caution must be taken around open flames.


Jack O’ Lanterns. What is Halloween without carved and lit pumpkins? For the best fire safety for your Houston area home, and to prevent fire damage, use a battery operated candle or a flashlight instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do elect to use a candle for your pumpkin, elevate it on a fire resistant table to keep it away from trick or treater feet and costumes. Also, remember to place it away from other flammable materials like curtains, upholstered furniture, and other items.


Flammable Decorations. Many typical Halloween decorations are highly flammable. Crepe paper, dried flowers, cornstalks, sheets, and other elements can easily catch fire and cause damage to your home, or injure people in your home. Be mindful too of any strings of lights used, and make sure that the wires are not frayed and that electrical circuits are not overloaded. If using extension cords for any decorations or lights, do not run them under curtains or fabric as excessive heat can develop causing a fire. Do you and your family know the best route to get out of your Houston area home in the event of a fire? Unfortunately, very few families actually plan, test, and practice home evacuation in the event a fire damages their home. You simply cannot depend on your main points of access (front, back, or patio doors) to be accessible during a fire. That is why it is important to have a plan that works for a variety of different situations, and that each family member knows which route to take during an emergency evacuation.

SERVPRO of Baytown & Channelview wants to remind our neighbors that a home fire can be the result of a lightening strike, bad wiring, candles, a kitchen fire, or a host of other unforeseeable circumstances. We hope you will never need your emergency plan, but just to be on the safe side, here are 8 steps you can follow to prepare, test, and practice a fire evacuation plan for your home: 

1.      Identify 2 exit points for each room. These usually include the main interior door and a window.

2.      Chart each room’s exit points on a mock-up of your home. It doesn’t have to be to scale; the point is for you to be able to visualize the best points of egress in the event of an emergency.

3.      Play “What If?” What if the fire broke out in the kitchen while everyone was asleep? What would the best exit plan for each bedroom be? What if the fire broke out in the attic while the kids were upstairs and the adults were in the basement? Which exits should everyone use?

4.      Walk the routes. Test each route and access point, including windows. Any windows with security bars should have an emergency release, and each family member should know how to use it.

5.      Test smoke alarms. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound your smoke alarms make. You don’t want anyone to delay evacuating the home during a fire because they don’t recognize the alarm.

6.      Select a meet-up area. Choose where you and your family will meet after an evacuation. It needs to be a safe distance from your home, like a mailbox at the end of your driveway.

7.      Try out each “What If” scenario. Have your family test each evacuation route. Then test in the dark, and see if everyone can still manage to find their way out quickly. During the tests, take note of furniture or other items that impede evacuation. Additionally, pay attention to landscaping that needs pruning.

8.      Make changes to evacuation plan, and practice. While it’s impossible to plan for every possibility, preparing your family before a fire sweeps through your home will allow for a quicker exit, and could potentially save lives. Practice monthly or quarterly, paying attention to any windows that are sticking, and always look for ways to make the process faster.
